The UCSD Swine Flu Study:
Help Us Learn More about Influenza
As many of you know, a new form of Influenza virus (now known as “pandemic” or “Swine” flu) was detected in Mexico and San Diego last spring that has subsequently spread to other parts of the world. Several other American Universities have had outbreaks of this virus within the first few weeks after school has reopened. Most of these outbreaks have run through the student body over several weeks before decreasing in activity. As far as we know, these outbreaks have not been systematically studied in such a way that we can understand how Influenza virus spreads through college populations and how it evolves as the epidemic proceeds. If an outbreak develops at UCSD, members of UCSD’s Department of Medicine and the UCSD Student Health Service would like to invite student volunteers to help us better understand this new virus.
If you get symptoms of “the flu”…
If you get symptoms of the flu, including a temperature of >1000 F and a cough or sore throat, we would like to invite you to participate in this study. If you decide to participate in the study, we’ll obtain some information about you and your symptoms, sample your nose with a cotton swab for the virus that causes the flu and draw a blood sample. We would give you a diary to record your symptoms and then check back with you in about 10 days to see how your recovery has gone.
What do we hope to learn?
By comparing your virus to others, we are hoping to understand how the virus is transmitted in college settings and how it evolves as an epidemic proceeds. We also hope to learn more about the degree of illness the virus causes and to develop better ways to diagnose this and other viruses in the future.
If you are interested in volunteering for the study…
If you are interested in participating in the study, we’ll make it as convenient for you as we can. Just enter your information in the box below and let us know how to contact you. We will then tell you more about the study and answer any questions you might have.
